Machiya hands down is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in London! Machiya was brought to us by the same people behind the famous Kanada-Ya ramen, which is just a couple of doors down. Machiya has a small menu of home-style cooked dishes great to enjoy with an intimate group of friends. Just remember to check Machiya's daily specials for some hidden gems.

Machiya Hot Wings 500g- £8.00
As you guys already know I am obsessed with fried chicken so I had to try Machiya's hot wings, originally a special, this popular dish is now a staple on the main menu. The wings are fried to perfection and the flavouring is so juicy with a little kick. I definitely recommend this dish!

Beef Tataki- £10.00
My friend suggested trying this dish which I was hesitant on trying. However the meat was so tender it melted in my mouth, there was also a slight rice wine vinegar taste which added a subtle tartness. If you like steak I would suggest you try and tell me what you think about it.

Gyudon- £8.50
I love Japanese donburi's and will always order a rice dish at Japanese restaurants. The tenderness of the beef and onions along with the sweetness of the sauce hits the right spots, especially after a long, cold day.

Tonkatsu- £9
Deep fried pork is always a winner in my book, Machiya's tonkatsu comes with tonkatsu sauce and mustard to dip as well as a cabbage salad. The thickness of the pork is much thicker than I am used to but it makes the taste even juicier.

Katsudon- £11
Katsudon is one of my favourite dishes to order, I love the deep fried cutlet in egg with sweet onions. Like Machiya's tonkatsu the pieces of the cutlet are very thick but more meat the better right?

Yuzu Salmon- £9.50
I love yuzu and I love salmon so why not try them in a dish together. As nice as it sounds this dish did not really impress me since the yuzu overpowered the whole dish which made it taste overly citrusy. The salmon was ok but I think I will stick to salmon teriyaki if I order salmon at a Japanese restaurant.

Yaki Imo- £4.50
Did someone say sweet potato?!!? If you are like me you love sweet potato, therefore, whenever there if there is a sweet potato dish you will definitely order to try it. The dish came out as a half, baked sweet potato covered with a yuzu ponzu sauce. I wish the dish was baked for longer but overall was okay.

Matcha mille crepe- £5.00
MATCHAAAAA!!!! Haha you guys already know how obsessed I am about matcha so of course I order the matcha mille crepe. It was definitely love at first bite, the amount of matcha cream there is between each layer and how soft each of the crepe layers are. My mouth is watering thinking about it. I would also recommend you come to machiya and get a pot of sencha tea and a matcha dessert to go along with it.

Matcha fondant- £5.00
Did some say matcha lava cake?!?!?!? Yes that's right Machiya sells a matcha lava cake that oozes a yummy matcha sauce. What would mak this dessert even more perfect is if they added a scoop of vanilla icecream.

Matcha roll cake-£5.00
You can never go wrong with a roll cake and Machiya's matcha roll cake is no exception. The creamy matcha filling and surprise agar jelly is a treat for your taste buds.

Where to find Machiya:
5 Panton Street, London, SW1Y 4DL.

I hope you have enjoyed reading my review of Machiya. Please tell me what your favourite Japanese dishes are.

Whenever someone asks me to recommend me a restaurant I will always suggest On the Bab. On the Bab is a guilty pleasure of mine, I may have or may not have gone there twice in a space of a week. Serving Korean Street food to London since 2013, this restaurant remains popular with the London crowd with On the Bab now having four locations at Shoreditch, Covent Garden, St Paul's and Marleybone.

On the Bab has three signature mains, On the Rice, On the Buns and On the Noodles. Each main allows you to choose a variety of different fillings including bulgogi beef, spicy pork, spicy chicken and more. Now that you all know my love of On the Bab, let's go through my favourite dishes on offer.

On the rice with spicy pork (£8.50)
On the Bab's take on the traditional bibimbap does not disappoint. The spicy pork is flavourful and the vegetables give each mouthful a nice crunch. On the Bab also offers a bulgogi beef, spicy chicken and fried chicken version if pork is not your thing. Just make sure to fully mix before eating!

On the Bun with a breaded prawn patty (£8.50)

Who doesn't love buns? With all of On the Bab buns, they include their signature salad and kimchi mayo sauce. I love how the soft bun with the crunchy prawn patty compliments each other. As with most of On the Bab's dishes the filling can be of your choice.

On the roll with bulgogi beef (£7.50)
On the Bab's version of Korea's comfort food kimbab includes a generous amount of fried onion to give it an extra crunch. I love kimbab with bulgogi and On the Bab's version lived up to my expectations. Unfortunately this dish is only available at their Covent Garden branch.

YangYum Chicken (£5.50 - £26.90)
Did someone say fried chicken? My favourite dish at On the Bab is definitely their fried chicken, its crispiness and tastiness make it my number one place to get fried chicken in London. On the Bab offers several different flavours at each location, my favourite is the garlic mayo flavour, available at their Covent Garden location. If you want to eat it like the Korean locals, remember to order beer which you can dispense by yourself at the table. This is otherwise known as Chimaek meaning chicken and beer, a popular authentic Korean dish amongst the locals!

Locations:
  • 36 Wellington Street, London, WC2E 7BD
  • 305 Old Steet, London, EC1V 9LA
  • 39 Marylebone Lane, London, W1U 2NP
  • 9 Ludgate Broadway, London, EC1V 6DU

On the Bab is a great place to take friends to, with a great atmosphere, tasty food and if you love to share food like me, On the Bab have the cutest little bowls to eat with. I hope you enjoyed reading my review. Tell me what are your favourite places to eat below!

Happy New Year!
Welcome fellow foodies to my little blog on my food adventures in London. I thought I would start 2018 by sharing my passion, FOOD! Being a student and living in such a big city has exposed me to the colourful food culture that is in London. Therefore my first post will be on something I love…. MATCHA!

Matcha for those who don't know, is finely ground powder of green tea leaves. Traditionally matcha was used to perform Japanese tea ceremonies but now it is a popular flavour of many desserts and drinks. Being Vietnamese and British, tea is always on my mind. Therefore matcha desserts became an instant love. London has also recently fallen in love with matcha as you can find more places serving matcha desserts compared to just a year ago. Let me show you my favourite matcha desserts on offer right now!

Tsujiri's matcha soft serve

Tsujiri
Tsujiri is a Japanese dessert chain in Soho offering a variety of matcha drinks and desserts. The chain also offers hojicha versions of all their desserts and drinks which is an added bonus. I personally prefer their matcha soft serve on its own however they offer sundaes and float drinks.
Price: £4.20-6.30
Location: 47 Rupert Street, Soho, London W1D 7PD

Kova's matcha mille crêpe

Kova
Kova is a cute Japanese patisserie in the heart of Soho, famous for their mille crêpe cakes. Their bestseller would be their matcha crêpe cake, and I can see why due to its creamy and sweetness. Another favourite of mine is their matcha yuzu mousse and their souffle cheesecake. If you can’t get enough of their cakes, Kova makes custom whole cakes to order.
Price: £3.50-6.60
Location: Unit 5 12, 9 St Anne's Court, Soho, London W1F 0BB

Machiya's genmaicha mille crêpe (top) & matcha roll cake (bottom)

Oliver Maki's terrarium matcha tiramisu

Oliver Maki
Oliver Maki, located on Dean Street is a restaurant serving Japanese fusion food.
