12 places to get matcha desserts in London
Happy New Year!
Welcome fellow foodies to my little blog on my food adventures in London. I thought I would start 2018 by sharing my passion, FOOD! Being a student and living in such a big city has exposed me to the colourful food culture that is in London. Therefore my first post will be on something I love…. MATCHA!
Welcome fellow foodies to my little blog on my food adventures in London. I thought I would start 2018 by sharing my passion, FOOD! Being a student and living in such a big city has exposed me to the colourful food culture that is in London. Therefore my first post will be on something I love…. MATCHA!
Matcha for those who don't know, is finely ground powder of green tea leaves. Traditionally matcha was used to perform Japanese tea ceremonies but now it is a popular flavour of many desserts and drinks. Being Vietnamese and British, tea is always on my mind. Therefore matcha desserts became an instant love. London has also recently fallen in love with matcha as you can find more places serving matcha desserts compared to just a year ago. Let me show you my favourite matcha desserts on offer right now!
Tsujiri's matcha soft serve |
Tsujiri
Tsujiri is a Japanese dessert chain in Soho offering a variety of matcha drinks and desserts. The chain also offers hojicha versions of all their desserts and drinks which is an added bonus. I personally prefer their matcha soft serve on its own however they offer sundaes and float drinks.
Price: £4.20-6.30
Location: 47 Rupert Street, Soho, London W1D 7PD
Kova
Kova is a cute Japanese patisserie in the heart of Soho, famous for their mille crêpe cakes. Their bestseller would be their matcha crêpe cake, and I can see why due to its creamy and sweetness. Another favourite of mine is their matcha yuzu mousse and their souffle cheesecake. If you can’t get enough of their cakes, Kova makes custom whole cakes to order.
Price: £3.50-6.60
Location: Unit 5 12, 9 St Anne's Court, Soho, London W1F 0BB
Machiya
Serving simple Japanese dishes with big flavours, Machiya is the place to eat. Their desserts are no exception. The two desserts I fell in love with are the genmaicha mille crêpes and the matcha roll cake. Machiya also has a special menu that offers limited-edition desserts, so make sure to look out for that!
Price: £2.50-5.00
Location: 5 Panton Street, Soho, London SWY 4DL
Tombo's matcha souffle cheesecake (left), matcha soft serve (front), matcha white chocolate tart (right), matcha frappe (back) |
Tombo
Tombo was the first place I tried matcha desserts four years ago. They have opened two more branches in Soho and Fitzrovia, if you are unable to get to their main location in South Kensington. Tombo offers a range of different desserts with my favourite treats being the matcha white chocolate tart and their matcha soufflé cheesecake.

Location: 29 Thurloe Place, Kensington, London SW7 2HQ. 28 D'Arblay Street, Soho, London W1F 8EW. 4 Windmill Street, Fitzrovia, London W1T 2HZ
Oliver Maki
Oliver Maki, located on Dean Street is a restaurant serving Japanese fusion food. The restaurant became famous for their Terrarium Matcha Tiramisu and for a good reason, not only is the dessert really cute, the creaminess is a plus for me. An added bonus is that the rocks found on the dessert are made of chocolate too!

Location: 33 Dean Street, Soho, London W1D 4PW
Shibuya Soho
Shibuya Soho is a Japanese Restaurant on Shaftesbury Avenue, you won’t miss it with the line forming outside the restaurant! This popular restaurant is well-known for their shaved ice desserts offering several flavours including matcha, strawberry, mango and more. Shibuya Soho also serves cakes, which includes a personal favourite of mine, the matcha roll cake.
